ACS Biomaterials Science & Engineering has published a fascinating article by Sharma et Al about Heterotopic ossification (HO) in tendons and their structural and elemental compositions.
Rat Achilles tendons were studied at various weeks post transection to characterize HO deposits in the healing tendons.
Nanoprobe X-ray Fluorescence (Nano-XRF) was performed to “obtain further in-depth information about the elemental distribution at the immediate mineralization front”. Samples were mounted onto Silson’s silicon nitride 1.0 x 1.0 mm, 1 μm thick membranes for the Nano-XRF measurements, which were taken at the NanoMAX beamline at the MAX IV Laboratory in Sweden.
