The Counterintuitive Relationship between Orbital Energy, Orbital Overlap, and Bond Covalency in CeF62– and CeCl62–

The Journal of the American Chemical Society has published an article by Branson et Al on the investigation of 4f covalency in CeF62– and CeCl62– using X-ray spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and theoretical methods.

The abstract concludes “these results highlight that only a concerted consideration of both atomic orbital overlap and energy matching in f-element systems leads to an accurate picture of their bonding.”

Silson’s silicon nitride membranes of 100 nm thickness were used for the STXM Sample Preparation – solution was transferred onto our membranes and another window was placed on top and sealed with epoxy, creating an environment concealed from oxygen and moisture.
