ACS Publications Chemical & Biomedical Imaging has published an article by Ortega et Al about the characterisation of interactions between metals and proteins, which is often difficult due to “the low concentration of metals in biological tissues and the sometimes labile nature of the chemical bonds involved”.
Metal imaging was used to more effectively understand the cellular functions of essential metals. Rat Hippocampal Neurons were grown onto Silson’s silicon nitride membranes as they are suitable for synchrotron X-ray fluorescence (SXRF) analyses. Our membranes of size of 1.5 x 1.5 mm, 500 nm thick in a 5.0 x 5.0 mm, 200 μm frame were used, with a small orientation membrane in one corner.
